TalentEd is a registered charity that works with expert teachers to support bright students from low income backgrounds. They recruit expert, qualified teachers as after-school tutors to support the students and believe every young person should have the support, skills and aspirations to realise their potential.

Since 2012 TalentEd has supported over 1,200 bright students from disadvantaged backgrounds but with this success comes a challenge – trying to achieve growth and sign up new schools whilst ensuring they could attract and select tutors to support these programmes in a timely and efficient manner.

TalentEd had established a robust selection process to ensure they could maintain the high standard of tutors being recruited.  However, the screening of applications and finding convenient times to interview tutors was proving challenging, especially as the number of applications varied throughout the year.  This was drawing resources away from TalentEd’s core activity.  A flexible solution was required that could respond to the varied demand and ensure a speedy response to any potential tutors.

When a member of staff left, TalentEd approached Talent Gateway with the intention to recruit someone to specifically manage the application process.  On discussing TalentEd’s unique challenge, Talent Gateway saw an opportunity to help the charity by outsourcing the recruitment process.  A bespoke screening service was developed that could effectively respond to varying levels of demand whilst representing a cost effective, scalable solution to Talent Ed compared with recruiting in house.

Initially, a no commitment pilot was agreed which was up and running within two weeks with Talent Gateway managing the process from initial application to tutor approval.  Weekly phone calls were used to monitor progress and ensure embedment in the team. The pilot proved to be a huge success and cost-effective way of working.  Talent Gateway were able to speak to applicants in evenings and could ensure contact with the tutor within 48 hours of the application.
