The value of “why”

What inspires your workforce?

Is it the products you sell? Is it your sales process? Is it the way you stand out from the competition? Or is it what you believe in?

Simon Sinek, author of Start with Why, claims that people don’t buy what you do, they buy WHY you do it. Think about the products you buy on a regular basis – do you select a brand solely based on the actual item, or do you choose the promise that speaks to you?

The same applies to your customers, and your employees.

You might think it’s not a particularly productive use of your time, but trying to articulate your core business purpose is exactly how you will engage those around you to take action.

Sinek describes it like this:

“If you hire someone because they can do a job, they’ll work for your money. If you hire someone who believes what you believe, they’ll bring their blood, sweat and tears.”

So what do you believe?

Here at Talent Gateway, we’ve been putting some thought into that very question. We know from the work we do how important values are and we wanted to put some deeper thought into our own.

In doing so we realised it’s not easy to separate what we do and how we do it, from WHY it’s so important to us.  So recently, our team got together to brainstorm our ‘why’ – our principles, the fundamentals of why we do what we do.

We started the day by each spending 15 minutes answering a series of questions and jotting our answers down our unedited answers on post-it notes:

  • What is important at Talent Gateway?
  • What is unique about working here?
  • What do our customers believe about us?
  • What are our greatest strengths?

We stuck these up on the wall and tried to group them according to themes – hoping that they weren’t completely unrelated to each other!

Surprisingly, despite the mixture of skills and experience in our team, we were all in sync. After we filtered through all the post-its we were able to see a series of strong themes emerging – five values that we’d all picked up on.

The next day, we came back fresh, and took another look. We tried to reduce those values into a single proposition and this is what we came up with.

At our core, we want to help people lead fulfilling lives.

How do we do that?

Bringing this belief into our business offering isn’t as “out there” as you’d think.

We do things differently – we believe recruitment can be done better by keeping this ‘why’ at the centre of everything we do.

We aim to have an in-depth understanding of our client’s culture and we also explore the values and beliefs of each candidate, so that put together both will fly.

We only put forward candidates we are confident will thrive in a particular environment, going beyond the traditional markers of skills and experience.

What’s more we encourage our clients to focus on their people, because that’s how to achieve success. Nurturing your staff is what sets you apart from the crowd, it’s what gets the work done, and it’s what inflates the bottom line. Your employees are looking for a workplace that inspire them, supports them and cherishes them.

Those who lose sight of this won’t make it in this competitive environment.
