Very early on in my career I saw the same thing happen over and over again: the businesses that did well had the right people in the right roles, and the ones that struggled didn’t.
It wasn’t always about the best product or the cleverest strategy – it was about the team actually doing the work.
Plenty of well‑known business writers have said the same in their own way. Jim Collins talks about getting “the right people on the bus, in the right seats” before deciding where to drive it, and years of research from firms like Gallup shows that teams who are well led and properly supported simply perform better.
I set up Talent Gateway in 2012 as a simple recruitment business for smaller companies. The aim was to help founders hire good people without all the usual grief.
It didn’t take long to spot a pattern: if the basics weren’t in place – a clear plan, sensible structure, a decent “why work here?” story and a half‑decent hiring process – even a great hire could only paper over the cracks for so long.
That’s when the 5P’s™ idea started. Over time, working with lots of different founders, it turned into the framework we use today. Plan, Proposition, Promote, Process and Perform are now the foundations for everything we do – a simple way to line up your growth plans with your people, and make sure the team, systems and day‑to‑day habits can actually support where you’re heading.
We also practise what we preach. We only work with founders who know that if they focus properly on the people side, the business will move faster and they’ll stand a much better chance of reaching their prize – whether that’s scaling up, raising money or selling.

Today, Talent Gateway is much more than a start-up recruitment business.
We work alongside founders as a fractional people partner, help with key senior and specialist hires, and run focused projects to sort out things like hiring, onboarding and leadership so the whole business runs more smoothly.
In short: we help founders build the team and structure to scale or sell. And we stay alongside you until you’re confident to go it alone. .
